Top 5 walking trails on Rathlin Island: A Hiker’s Guide
Rathlin Island is a walker’s paradise. Its compact size — just seven miles from end to end — means that on foot is genuinely the best way to experience everything the island has to offer. Every trail on Rathlin combines spectacular Atlantic coastal scenery with outstanding wildlife, and the island’s unhurried pace makes every walk feel like a genuine exploration rather than a tick-box exercise.
Whether you are a seasoned hiker looking for a challenging coastal route or a casual walker wanting a gentle stroll from the harbour, Rathlin has a trail for you. Here are the five best walks on the island.
1. Church Bay to the West Light Seabird Centre (Main Road)
Distance: 4 miles one way (8 miles return) | Difficulty: Moderate | Time: 3–4 hours return
This is Rathlin’s signature walk — the route that most visitors take, following the island’s single-track road westward from Church Bay harbour to the RSPB West Light Seabird Centre. Despite being along a road, it is one of the finest coastal walks in Northern Ireland. Traffic is virtually non-existent, the scenery throughout is spectacular, and the destination — the clifftops above one of the largest seabird colonies in the British Isles — is exceptional.
The walk climbs gently as it heads west, passing through the heart of the island with views north across the North Channel to Scotland and south down the island’s southern arm. In spring and summer, the verges are rich with wildflowers. In autumn, the light on the sea is extraordinary.
Tip: Take the puffin Bus to the Seabird Centre and walk back — you get the reward first, then enjoy the scenery at your own pace on the return.
2. RSPB Roonivoolin Trail
Distance: Approximately 3 miles | Difficulty: Easy to Moderate | Time: 1.5–2 hours
The Roonivoolin Trail is an off-road walking trail through the RSPB nature reserve on the southern arm of Rathlin Island — a gentler, more sheltered alternative to the road route west. This is arguably the best trail on the island for wildlife, passing through a mix of unimproved grassland, wetland areas, coastal heath and clifftop scrub.
Look out for Irish hares bounding across the fields, common blue butterflies in the grassland, and a rich variety of wildflowers including early purple orchids, harebells and devil’s-bit scabious. Skylarks sing overhead in spring and summer, and this is the part of the island where you are most likely to encounter Rathlin’s famous chough — a rare, red-billed member of the crow family that has its only Northern Ireland breeding presence here.
Tip: Walk this trail in the morning when the light is best and the island is quietest.
3. Craigmacagan Trail (East End)
Distance: Approximately 2 miles | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 1–1.5 hours
The Craigmacagan Trail at the eastern end of Rathlin offers views across the North Channel towards Scotland — on a clear day, the Mull of Kintyre is clearly visible, just 15 miles away. This shorter trail passes through farmland and clifftop areas and provides excellent opportunities to see seabirds and coastal wildlife.
The East Lighthouse and Bruce’s Cave are also accessible from this end of the island — the cave where Robert the Bruce is said to have found his famous spider-inspired inspiration in 1306. Adding these to the Craigmacagan Trail makes for a satisfying half-day out that combines walking, history and wildlife.
Tip: Combine with a visit to the East Lighthouse for views across to Scotland.
4. Church Bay Harbour Walk
Distance: Under 1 mile | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 30–45 minutes
For those with limited time or mobility, or for use as a warm-up before or after a longer walk, the gentle stroll around Church Bay is well worth doing. The harbour, the Boathouse Visitor Centre, the small white-sand beach, the old church and the Manor House are all within easy reach of the ferry landing.
Seals are frequently visible from the harbour wall or the beach, often resting on rocks in the bay. The view across Church Bay to the green hills behind is quintessential Rathlin. In the evening, with the day-trippers gone, this short walk is particularly peaceful.
5. The Island Circuit (Full Day)
Distance: Approximately 12–14 miles | Difficulty: Challenging | Time: Full day (6–8 hours)
For experienced and enthusiastic walkers, it is possible to combine multiple trails and road sections into an extended full-day circuit of much of Rathlin Island. Such a walk might take in Church Bay, the West Light Seabird Centre, the Bull Point lighthouse area, the Roonivoolin Trail, the Craigmacagan Trail and the East Lighthouse — covering most of the island’s key highlights on foot.
This is a demanding walk, particularly in poor weather, and requires good navigation skills and appropriate equipment. The island is exposed and the weather can change rapidly. This is a route for those who relish a proper day’s hiking rather than casual walkers.
Tip: Stay overnight on the island to do this walk comfortably — attempting it as a day trip leaves very little margin.
