Walking Trails on Rathlin Island

Walking is one of the great pleasures of Rathlin Island, and the island’s network of trails and routes offers something for every level of walker. From easy strolls around Church Bay village to longer cliff-top routes with breathtaking Atlantic views, exploring Rathlin on foot is the best way to truly experience its remarkable landscape, wildlife and atmosphere.

Church Bay to West Light Seabird Centre

Distance: 4 miles one way (8 miles return) | Difficulty: Moderate | Time: Approximately 3-4 hours return

The main walking route on Rathlin follows the island’s single-track road westward from Church Bay harbour to the RSPB West Light Seabird Centre. This is the route that most day visitors take, and while it is along a road rather than a dedicated footpath, traffic is virtually non-existent and the scenery throughout is spectacular.

The route passes through the heart of the island, with views north across the North Channel towards Scotland and south down the island’s southern arm. The road gradually climbs as it heads west, arriving at the clifftop above the Seabird Centre with views that on a clear day extend to the Mull of Kintyre, the Scottish islands of Islay and Jura, and the Antrim coast.

The walk takes approximately 75 to 90 minutes each way. Most visitors take the puffin Bus for the outward journey and walk back, giving themselves a leisurely return through the island’s landscape.

RSPB Roonivoolin Trail

Distance: Approximately 3 miles | Difficulty: Easy to Moderate | Time: 1.5 to 2 hours

The Roonivoolin Trail is an off-road walking trail in the RSPB nature reserve on the southern arm of Rathlin Island. This is a gentler, more sheltered walk than the road route to the west, passing through a rich variety of habitats including unimproved grassland, wetland areas and coastal heath.

The trail is excellent for wildlife. Visitors may encounter Irish hares, common blue butterflies, wildflowers including early purple orchids and harebells, and a variety of birds including skylark, snipe, buzzard and raven. This is also the area where Rathlin’s famous chough family — Northern Ireland’s only breeding chough — can sometimes be spotted.

Craigmacagan Trail

Distance: Approximately 2 miles | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 1 to 1.5 hours

The Craigmacagan Trail is located at the eastern end of Rathlin Island and offers views across the North Channel towards Scotland. This shorter trail passes through farmland and clifftop areas and provides good opportunities to see seabirds and coastal wildlife. The East Lighthouse and Bruce’s Cave are accessible from this end of the island.

Church Bay Village Walk

Distance: Less than 1 mile | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 30 to 45 minutes

For those with limited time or mobility, a gentle stroll around Church Bay itself is well worthwhile. The harbour, the Boathouse Visitor Centre, the small beach, the church and the Manor House guesthouse are all within easy walking distance of the ferry landing. Seals are often visible from the harbour wall, and the views across the bay are lovely.

Walking Tips for Rathlin Island

  • Footwear: Sturdy walking boots or trail shoes are recommended — paths can be muddy and uneven
  • Clothing: The island is exposed and weather can change quickly — always bring a waterproof jacket regardless of the forecast
  • Water and food: Carry water and snacks, particularly for longer walks. There are limited food options beyond Church Bay village
  • Maps: Pick up a trail map from the Boathouse Visitor Centre in Church Bay when you arrive
  • Leave No Trace: Rathlin is a nature reserve — stay on marked trails, take all litter home, and keep dogs on leads to protect ground-nesting birds
